Former director of RG Kar Hospital had criminal links with co-accused in unlawful enrichment case: CBI

Calcutta: Arrested former director of RG Kar Hospital Sandip Ghosh, along with other “co-accused”, had a “criminal nexus” for “illicit gain”, according to the initial findings of the CBI investigation into financial irregularities at the local medical facility, an official claimed on Saturday.

The central investigative authority also presented the results to a special court here at a hearing earlier this week, he said.

The CBI had arrested Ghosh, two suppliers and his security guard for their alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the government hospital where the rape and murder of a young doctor had sparked nationwide protests.

“These (two) vendors were known to Ghosh as he worked at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. We found that they awarded the contracts to RGKMC&H (RG Kar Medical College and Hospital) only because of their proximity to Ghosh,” the official said.

Ghosh was stationed at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for two years from 2016 to 2018.

He was then transferred to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, where he was posted until February 2021 before taking over as the Chief of RGKMC&H.

The CBI investigation also revealed that Ghosh had “abetted” the organisation of his security guard’s wife by awarding the contract for a café in the hospital, he said.

“Both the vendors were in Murshidabad and Ghosh brought them to Kolkata when he was appointed as the director of RG Kar Hospital. They were given preference to supply materials to the hospital,” the official said.

“It has been found that all of them were in frequent contact with each other, which supports the allegation of criminal connection as stated in the FIR,” the CBI had said in its statement before the special court in Alipore on September 3.

“The evidence collected during the investigation so far has established that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, in criminal association with other co-accused, has illegally caused wrongful harm to the government and has conferred corresponding wrongful benefit on himself and other accused,” the central agency said.

The CBI further claimed that the “work order letters were addressed to various officials of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital but were never handed over to them.”

The investigating agency, the official said, is also probing the role of Ghosh’s security guard as “he was the person who contacted traders to sell the hospital’s biomedical waste.”
