Couple are left fighting for life after being hit by ‘drunk’ off-duty cop who ‘wasn’t breathalyzed or arrested’

An off-duty police officer who was allegedly intoxicated crashed his car into two people on a motorbike – leaving the pair fighting for their lives in hospital.

The collision happened around 9:21pm in Illinois Thursday, and left Chelsey Farley and boyfriend Trevor Hopkins severely injured. They were ejected from their vehicle.

The couple were hospitalized, and the driver who hit them was identified as Springfield Police Sgt. Michael Egan. He is seen stumbling and struggling to stand in footage filmed shortly after the crash.

Deputy Chief Sara Pickford of Springfield Police said Egan’s last day of employment was the same day as the collision, and that he had just retired after 20 years.

Egan – who was allegedly fed water and gum by the responding officers – was not arrested or breathalyzed on the scene, and got away with just a ticket.

An internal investigation has since been launched ‘to ensure that all policies and procedures were adhered to by Springfield Police personnel at the scene.’

Illinois State cops, meanwhile, are handling a probe into the crash, as Egan was said to have refused a sobriety test, and was only taken for a blood test four hours after the fact.

‘If it weren’t a cop in these videos, he would be in jail like anyone else,’ said Chelsey’s sister in a post to X Saturday, where she shared footage filmed by witnesses showing Egan at the scene of the crime and revealed the victim is a mother-of-two.

‘[He] received special treatment while my sister is fighting for her life.

‘They did a field sobriety test on my unconscious sister & her boyfriend but not on the officer who hit them.

‘They state he used his right to refuse a breathalyzer & did not arrest him on a DUI,’ she wrote.

She went on to claim that Egan ‘was NOT retired at the time of the crash’, as his superiors have insinuated.

‘F**k that bastard,’ the woman who lives in San Diego but is originally from Springfield said. ‘They are stating he’s retired in all the local headlines.’

Chelsey’s other sister, Caitlyn Weiss, told Fox Illinois how the family wants answers, speaking to the station Friday ahead of her sister’s first of what she said is set to be several surgeries – a procedure that lasted more than 10 hours.

‘Our family is just outraged,’ she said, citing the now viral footage of what appears to be a visibly inebriated Egan at the scene as member of his own department stand around him.

‘We want accountability and justice from the Springfield department for this type of egregious act, and for all the families who have had this type of trouble and heartache all year,’ she said.

‘It’s been all over social media since 9pm,’ Weiss continued of the clips, seemingly filmed by a bystander who is heard expressing disbelief over what he sees as Egan’s drunkenness.

‘This officer is clearly drunk, clearly stumbling in the videos that everyone can reference and see all over,’ Weiss agreed.

‘The state police told me that I shouldn’t believe things on social media and that I need to put trust in them.

‘They wouldn’t give me an answer, the answer that we all need, of why there was no field sobriety test given to the Springfield police off duty officer,’ she added of the department’s handling of investigation, as state troopers were at the scene as well.

The following day, Weiss revealed Farley underwent strenuous surgery to repair her hips and legs, as her boyfriend is said to be dealing with head injuries and has to have work done to his face by a surgeon.

The Illinois State Police said in a statement that Egan’s Toyota Tundra was traveling north on East Lake Shore Drive near Laconwood Drive around 9:20pm when it cut off a Kawasaki motorcycle carrying the couple, failing to yield the right-of-way.

Corruption blog Springfield Leaks, meanwhile, offered a more in-depth account of the stop that ensued, reporting that Egan refused a field sobriety test and waited four hours to take him to a hospital.

The website received the account from an eyewitness, who said he saw Egan turn left into the Anchor Boat Club, cutting off a motorcycle carrying the couple.

The bystander, identified as Jason Rule, saw Hopkins and Farley treated and taken to a hospital as Egan remained behind.

Rule went on to claim he saw Egan receive special treatment by police – an assertion seemingly substantiated by the footage and accounts from Springfield Leaks journalists who arrived at the scene.

Rule said of the reckless maneuver that caused the motorcycle to collide with the rear passenger side of his Toyota, ‘He didn’t even turn into the Anchor Boat Club from the turning lane; he pulled right in front of the motorcycle.’

A family friend told the Eagle that Farley is awaiting surgery and the family is still waiting to hear if she will pull through.

Having been driving behind the motorcycle, he added how he was Egan being given repeated cups of water and gum by Springfield police.

‘[He] smelled like bourbon,’ Rule recalled.

Egan, meanwhile, is seen going in and out of his vehicle in the footage, stumbling several times.

It shows how he was neither handcuffed nor placed in the back of a police vehicle during the stop.

Instead, he was allowed to sit in the front seat of an Illinois State Trooper’s vehicle with the front passenger door open for an unspecified amount of time.

The footage further shows Egan being led to the front seat of an Illinois State Police patrol vehicle without being arrested, spurring questions from those gathered roadside watching the events unfold.

‘Why does he get special privileges?’ one observer reportedly asked. Another witness claimed he heard Egan – who was promoted to sergeant in 2022 – saying, ‘My buddies are going to take care of me.’

Illinois State Police, meanwhile, confirmed Egan refused to perform a field sobriety test, but did not say why troopers kept Egan on the scene for what witnesses said was four hours before taking him in for a blood test.

Egan was within his right to refuse the blood test, but still could be charged pending the results of the toxicology report. No further information was available about the status of the tests Sunday.

Weiss, meanwhile, said she was shocked by the message she received from State Police, as her sister remains in intensive care.

Egan was scheduled to have a retirement party Friday at the same bar he allegedly pulled out of on Thursday, Springfield Leaks reported – but that morning, the restaurant reportedly wrote on their Facebook page ‘This evening’s retirement party for Mike Egan has been cancelled.’

Egan was ticketed for the crash, cops confirmed.

His old department is still looking into the actions of officers at the scene, with Springfield Police Chief Ken Scarlette, ‘Both and active and retired law enforcement officers must be held to the same standards to maintain public trust and uphold the integrity of the Springfield Police Department.’

A separate statement from the Springfield Police Department added ‘to maintain transparency and accountability, an internal investigation is currently underway… to ensure that all policies and procedures were adhered to by Springfield Police.’

The department directed all other inquiries to the Illinois State Police. The force did not immediately respond to a DailyMail.com request for comment Sunday.
