US Open: Sinner outclasses Fritz in the final

US Open: Sinner outclasses Fritz in the final

Status: 08.09.2024 22:56

The American Taylor Fritz did not expect this: Jannik Sinner from Italy beats the US boy in the final of the US Open in New York in three sets with 6:3, 6:4 and 7:5.

Sinner needed 2 hours 17 minutes for his success and celebrated his second Grand Slam title after winning the Australian Open in January. He was under special observation in the first tournament after his doping scandal. Sinner had been cleared shortly before the US Open after two positive tests in the spring. Fritz had his strongest phase in the third set in particular – but Sinner was invincible that evening.

Sinner receives 3.6 million US dollars in prize money and is the first fourth man after Mats Wilander, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer to complete the hard court double with victories in New York and Melbourne within a calendar year. Fritz still receives a check for 1.8 million US dollars and jumps into the top ten of the world rankings with this good tournament performance.

Sinner only has one weak phase

The main key to the victory of the world number one was his flawless play. Especially in the second set, when the American played much more steadily, the sinner half died. Set number 1 went quite clearly to the Italian with 6:3.

In the third set, Fritz showed his best side. In the seventh game, he took a service game from his opponent – also because Sinner now made more mistakes in his performance. However, the local hero’s joy was short-lived: Sinner broke back and quickly earned himself two match points, of which he immediately used the first.

Celebrities won’t miss the finale

Pop superstar Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce, football pro for the Kansas City Chiefs and his teammate Patrick Mahomes traveled to the finale. Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman and singer Jon Bon Jovi also attended the party at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
