Top favorite Jannik Sinner has won the US Open for the first time and prevented a surprise home victory by Taylor Fritz. In front of many prominent fans such as pop superstar Taylor Swift, the world number one tennis player won a long, one-sided final against the Americans 6:3, 6:4, 7:5.

First win in New York for Sinner

He was under special observation in the first tournament after his doping scandal. Sinner was acquitted shortly before the US Open after two positive tests in the spring.

Finalist Fritz knocked out Zverev

Fritz, ranked 12th in the world, missed out on the first title win by a male US tennis player in New York since Andy Roddick in 2003 in the first Grand Slam final of his career. He had ended Alexander Zverev’s dream of a first Grand Slam title in the quarterfinals.

Sinner, on the other hand, became the first fourth man after Mats Wilander, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer to complete the hard court double with victories in New York and Melbourne within a calendar year. He is unbeaten in eleven matches on the tour.

Before the last Grand Slam of the year, the 23-year-old also triumphed in the dress rehearsal in Cincinnati, adding another chapter of success to his impressive and turbulent history this year.
