  • Android 15 is finished. Google has released the source code to developers.
  • However, the first updates for older cell phones are still pending.
  • In the next few weeks, the company’s own Pixel phones will be the first to receive the update. In the months that follow, the phones from Samsung, Xiaomi and Co.

Owners of Android phones still have to wait for Android 15 – but the new mobile OS has taken a big step towards release. Google has finished working on the version after four beta versions and published the source code as part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The step is a prerequisite for mobile phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Xiaomi and Co. to be able to use the system on their devices and adapt it to their needs.

Usually, Google released a corresponding update for its own Pixel phones at the same time as the source code was released, but this will be different in 2024. But Google fans probably won’t have to wait too long for it. All Pixel phones from the Pixel 5a onwards will receive the update “in the coming weeks,” Google manager Matthew McCulloug said in a blog post.

Updates for Pixel phones in a few weeks, phones from other manufacturers only in a few months

Updates for selected phones from Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo and Xiaomi will follow in the next few months, the post continues.

The manufacturers mentioned usually make major changes to the Google OS for their devices and integrate additional functions beyond those planned by Google. Therefore, the release of the updates takes longer.
