Princess of Wales “cancer-free” after completing chemotherapy | Catherine, Princess of Wales

The Princess of Wales has stated that after completing her chemotherapy treatment, she is doing everything in her power to “stay cancer-free” and that she plans to return to limited public appearances in the coming months.

In a video message released by Kensington Palace on Monday, Catherine said she was relieved that her preventative chemotherapy was over after nine “incredibly tough” and “frightening” months for her and her family.

“My goal now is to do everything I can to stay cancer-free,” she said.

The princess added that her “road to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.” She spoke of “stormy waters” and an unknown path ahead of her.

Catherine has begun working on some projects from home and will return to a “light program of external engagements” for the rest of the year, the palace said.

The Princess’ statement read: “As summer draws to a close, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy.

“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and unknown path.

“Cancer is complex, scary and unpredictable for anyone, especially those closest to you. But humility also allows you to confront your own vulnerabilities in ways you’ve never considered before and gain a new perspective on everything.

“Above all, this time has reminded William and me to reflect on and be grateful for the simple but important things in life that so many of us often take for granted. Simply to love and be loved.

“I am now focused on doing everything I can to stay cancer free. Although I have completed chemotherapy, my road to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.

“However, I am looking forward to getting back to work and, if possible, making some more public appearances in the coming months.

“Despite everything that has happened before, I begin this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation for life. William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn much strength from all those who are helping us during this time.

“The kindness, empathy and compassion of everyone was truly humbling.

“To all of you continuing your own cancer journey – I stand with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of the darkness can come light, so let that light shine brightly.”

The palace released a three-minute video showing William and the couple’s three children walking and playing. According to a Kensington Palace spokesperson, the video was filmed on a beach in Norfolk last month.

In March, Catherine announced in a video message to the nation that she had been diagnosed with cancer. Her news came shortly after her father-in-law, King Charles, announced that he too was being treated for cancer. The royal has since resumed some public appearances.

On Monday, Kensington Palace declined to disclose any further details about the princess’ illness and treatment, citing her right to medical confidentiality.

The palace is not disclosing Catherine’s public engagements in advance, but she is expected to undertake a number of commitments as part of her gradual return to public duties.

She is likely to support the Prince of Wales at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday in November and is also working on a Christmas service to be held in December.

Decisions about the Princess’s public appearances next year are expected to be made in line with medical advice.

The princess’s openness about her diagnosis and treatment, as well as her frankness in dealing with the emotional challenges she, her husband and her children faced, have been praised by cancer experts.
