Bodycam shows Colt and Colin Gray in threat investigation 2023

JEFFERSON, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – On Monday, Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum released bodycam video of a 2023 interview with the Apalachee High School shooting suspect and his father, part of an investigation into allegations that the teenage suspect threatened to go on a shooting rampage at a school.

“I don’t know. Maybe they misunderstood someone else. No, I swear,” said Colt Gray, the 14-year-old suspect, when repeatedly asked if he had made comments on the social media platform Discord suggesting he planned to shoot at a school.

In an interview with his father Colin Gray, Colt repeatedly denied having threatened to carry out school shootings.

Colt said he deleted his Discord account, which investigators said the threats originated from.

The threats were sent to an IP address at a home on Rice Creek Court in Jefferson.

According to the incident report obtained by Atlanta News First, investigators went to the home where Colt and Colin previously lived.

According to eviction documents obtained by Atlanta News First, the family was evicted in July 2022.

Investigators then tracked Colin to a new address in Jefferson on River Mist Circle.

At this address they conducted an interview with Colin and Colt.

“I don’t know if he said anything like that. And I’m going to be mad as hell if he did. And then all the guns will be gone. And he won’t have access to them anymore,” Colin told Dan Miller, an investigator with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

On May 21, 2023, a Jackson County deputy responded to an FBI tip regarding a shooting threat at a middle school.

Miller, along with Deputy Justin Elliott, interviewed Colt and Colin on May 21, 2023.

A follow-up telephone interview was conducted on May 23, 2023.

Investigators did not see sufficient evidence to bring charges against Colt.

According to the FBI, the sheriff’s office initially asked local schools to continue monitoring Colt.

On Monday, Mangum said they could not find any evidence that their staff alerted the schools.

“I regret that the school was not notified when there was a disturbance, of course I regret that,” Mangum said. “That will be resolved on our side, on the sheriff’s side.”
