Things could get uncomfortable in Dortmund this weekend. Right-wing extremists are planning an action parallel to Christopher Street Day for the first time in a long time.

Dortmund – For a long time, it was still about the Dortmund right-wing extremist scene. Names like Michael Brück or “SS-Siggi” (†) seem to have long been forgotten. The Dortmund police now describe the scene as “largely destroyed”. A success that the law enforcement officers can take credit for.

Dortmund Nazis suddenly back: Scene plans first action after a long time

It is all the more surprising that the right-wing extremists are now speaking out with a new action and pushing themselves back into the public eye. The scene is planning a larger gathering for Christopher Street Day (CSD) on Saturday (September 14), as the police announced a day before. There is talk of “mobilizations for the gathering” – as well as a counter-protest.

The action on Saturday was surprising because “the right-wing scene’s gathering activities in Dortmund have recently gone down to zero,” as the Dortmund police themselves stated. The police had “very strict and extensive requirements” for those gatherings for the CSD. The police are thus apparently maintaining one of the restrictive tactics against the right from recent years.

CSD Dortmund: Police want to curb hatred and incitement by right-wing extremists

The right-wing gathering in Dortmund is a delicate matter because attempts at intimidation, hatred and agitation are to be expected during the CSD. Christopher Street Day is an annual day of demonstrations on which people demonstrate primarily for the rights of LGBTQIA+ people (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and others). The right-wing scene is therefore a thorn in the side.

The aim of the Dortmund police on Saturday was to “protect every peaceful gathering, but also to take decisive action against criminals and disturbances of all kinds.” The police announced “strong personnel deployment and a clearly visible police presence in the area of operations.” (Read more police news from Dortmund at RUHR24 here).

CSD Dortmund: “The Disturbance Squad Germany” mobilizes right-wing extremists

The reason why the Dortmund police are on alert is that right-wing extremists are trying to disrupt other CSDs in Germany. A group called “Der Störtrupp Deutschland” (DST) is currently calling on neo-Nazis across the country to become active in Dortmund as well. Actions are planned near the main train station at 11:30 a.m.

“Home Dortmund”

The Dortmund-based “Heimat Dortmund” was formed from a merger of the right-wing extremist parties “Die Rechte” and the “NPD”. The parent party is simply called “Die Heimat” and has branches in various cities in Germany – such as Dortmund. The chairman of “Heimat Dortmund” is Sascha Krolzig, who has multiple criminal records and was once the federal and state chairman of the “Die Rechte” party in North Rhine-Westphalia. The deputy chairman of “Heimat Dortmund” is Alexander Deptolla, who also has a criminal record and is well known in Dortmund. “Heimat Dortmund” has three representatives in the Dortmund municipal parliaments: councilor Matthias Deyda and two district representatives in Huckarde and Scharnhorst.

The Dortmund Antifa wants to oppose this and will meet at around 11.15 a.m. at the Katharinentreppe at the main train station. They also expect that members and sympathizers of the right-wing extremist party “Heimat Dortmund” will make their way to the city.

CSD Dortmund: March starts at 1 p.m., festival on Friedensplatz at 2 p.m.

The Dortmund CSD will take place on Saturday between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. The main meeting point will be at Friedensplatz, directly in front of Dortmund City Hall, from 2 p.m. The police are expecting traffic restrictions in and around the city center and are advising people to avoid the city.

At 1 p.m. a march will start from the north exit of the main station in the direction of Friedensplatz. An exact route had not yet been determined on Friday morning (September 13). In 2023, however, the march went via Königswall, Burgwall, Schwanenwall and Ostwall to Friedensplatz. It is likely that it will be similar in 2024.
