Café Fela in Munich’s Maxvorstadt: Everything Matcha – Munich

Café Fela in Munich’s Maxvorstadt: Everything Matcha – Munich

In Café Fela, the old building and stucco ceiling meet bright chewing gum colors. The tables, vases and candles are orange, purple, green and pink. Guests in the Asian restaurant in Maxvorstadt sit on colorful flower-shaped cushions on their chairs. The drink of choice is served on flower-shaped cork coasters.

In terms of cuisine, Café Féla is all about the colorful matcha trend from Asia. The bright green tea powder can be enjoyed as a drink in the Matcha Latte (6 euros) – optionally with strawberry, mango or other variations – but also as a dessert such as the Matcha Tiramisu. In addition to classic coffee, there are specialties such as the Black Sesame Einspänner with espresso and black sesame (6.50 euros). There are also fruity-sweet desserts such as the Mango-Coconut Tiramisu (5.70 euros) or various cakes.

In keeping with the young crowd, cheerful pop music blares from the speakers. Some may find the decor kitschy, but some of Generation Z would probably describe it as “aesthetic”. The food and drink not only has to taste good, but also look good on Instagram posts and in Tiktok videos. Café Féla offers both.

Young women in particular come to the café on this day. Two of them use the colorful atmosphere as a backdrop for their photos. The friends use the time they spend waiting for their order to pose at the tables. “Can you take some more?” one of them asks her friend in English. Then they switch places, the photographer becomes the model. While the strawberry matcha is being drunk, the photos are being looked at further. They will probably be presented later on the profile on social media.

But Féla is not just a pretty setting, it is also a creative place. Empty ceramic figures such as Hello Kittys, birds or fantasy figures in various sizes are available on a white metal shelf, which guests can paint in the colors of their choice while they sip their iced matcha or eat a piece of colorful cake. There are also a few seats outside. If you are in a hurry, you can enjoy your matcha latte to go.

Féla is not a classic breakfast café. But lovers of sweet treats will be particularly happy here. Late risers can enjoy a relaxed sweet start to the day at lunchtime. Good to know: Card payments are not possible, you can only pay with cash or via PayPal.
