Gangster gets into trouble: Pune CID cracks down on social media glorification |

In a bid to increase deterrence and curb the glorification of criminal activities on social media, Criminal Investigation Department officials on Saturday afternoon questioned city gangster Gajanan Marne and others for posting videos praising their illegal activities.

This action followed the murder of NCP member Vanraj Andekar, after which members of the Andekar gang used social media to threaten revenge and announce possible gang conflict.

No effect after parade in February

In early February this year, the Pune Police Commissioner took an important step by summoning and parading around 267 miscreants, including gangsters, before the media. Despite this, gangsters continued to post provocative content on the internet.

The criminals produced included Gajanan Marne, Nilesh Ghaywal, Baba Bodke and Bandu Andekar, many of whom are facing serious charges such as murder, attempt to murder and extortion. Ghaywal, who is out on bail, has over 20 criminal cases pending against him. Marne is also out on bail and faces similar charges. Bodke, who is active in Vishrantwadi and Mulshi, is involved in extortion and several cases of sacking, and his gang in Pune has around 15 cases pending against him.

Pune police have appealed to citizens to help combat criminal advertisements on social media. It has launched a special WhatsApp number, 8975953100, for reporting such content. “We will take appropriate action against the accused based on the information provided,” a police spokesperson said.
