In April 2023, the American broadcaster HBO announcedthat they are working on a “Harry Potter” series. It will not be a spin-off like “Fantastic Beasts,” but a remake of the existing films. In series form, however, the books will be covered in much more detail.

This is what the Harry Potter series is about

The series “delves deeply into each of the iconic books,” says HBO CEO Casey Bloys. The project is also intended to be a very faithful adaptation.

According to initial reports, each season will focus on one of the books – the franchise consists of seven books in total. “Fantastic Beasts” will not be part of the series.

What seems to refute the concept of “1 book – 1 season” is the fact that the project is planned for “10 consecutive years”. How many seasons are actually planned has not yet been officially communicated.

Whatever the case, Bloys promised that the company will approach its new Harry Potter adventure with all the care and craftsmanship of this franchise.

An agreement on JK Rowling’s participation in the series was the biggest hurdle on the way to the film adaptation: the author has creative control over any use of her work. This agreement was concluded in 2023.

Rowling and her long-time collaborators Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts are executive producers, so it is expected that Rowling will be involved in key decisions about the series and will have a say.

When is the series coming out? And where can you watch it?

According to David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, the series is expected to air in 2026.

In the US, it will be available on the streaming service HBO Max. In Switzerland, Sky Show will probably secure the rights.

However, HBO has announced plans to expand the streaming service in Switzerland. However, this will not happen before 2025. It remains to be seen whether HBO Max will come to Switzerland in time for the launch of the HP series.

This is how high the production costs are

In terms of costs, the series will be on a par with series like “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones.” “We’ll do whatever it takes to produce a high-quality series,” says HBO boss Bloys.

As Deadline reports, House of the Dragon cost nearly $200 million. According to Bloys, fans can expect a similar outlay “or more” for the Potter series.
