Barricaded man shot after firing at Farmington Hills police, sheriff says

(CBS) — A man was shot by police in Farmington Hills on Sunday afternoon after he fired at police.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said Farmington Hills police went to a home in the area of Middlebelt Road and 12 Mile Road because of a report of domestic violence.

The sheriff’s office said the female victim left the home and police were attempting to make contact with the man when he pulled out a rifle and opened fire.

Officers then took cover and requested backup from other law enforcement agencies, including SWAT.

Two children were in the house when the man was shooting. The sheriff’s office says the children, who belong to the victim, barricaded themselves in an upstairs room. The man tried to break into the room, but the children were able to escape.

Shortly after the children fled, the man opened fire at the front door, according to the sheriff. Several houses and police cars were hit by the shots.

“A SWAT team sniper fired a shot in return fire and stopped the threat,” the sheriff’s office said.

The man was treated immediately for the gunshot wound and then taken to hospital. His condition is unknown.

The Macomb County Special Investigations Unit will investigate the sniper’s shooting.
