Before the Meta Connect event, photos of the Meta Quest 3S have leaked

There will be a lot of announcements from the big Zuck at Meta Connect 2024 next week, and we’re expecting a lite version of the Meta Quest 3, which is already one of the best VR headsets.

The big meta event is just around the corner, but that doesn’t mean the leaks are stopping, as new photos from UploadVR give us the clearest look yet at the new headset. The images were found on the Arcalive virtual reality channel, a South Korean version of Reddit.

The photos seem to confirm some things about the Quest 3S, like the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack, but we can see at least one USB-C port on one side of the device. Having only one port could prevent the headset from charging if you want to connect wired audio.

This is an annoying fact with today’s devices; the Apple Vision Pro, for example, also doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack, and low-latency audio is really only available with the Apple AirPods Pro 2 and possibly the just-released AirPods 4.

One of the images uploaded to the channel shows a regulatory label indicating a 4324 mAh battery, putting the device between the Quest 2 and the Quest 3.

Since the Quest 3S is meant to be the inside of a Quest 3 inside the body of a Quest 2, it’s hard to say whether the smaller battery capacity means battery life will match that of the Quest 3 or be better than the older Quest 2.

The lenses appear to be arranged in two groups of three on the front of the device, more reminiscent of the Quest 2 than the pill-shaped cutouts of the Quest 3. The cameras are said to be Fresnel lenses, which are supposed to be more efficient than the pancake design of the Quest 2.

The straps seem to have the same Y-shape as the Quest 3.

We see a controller similar to the Touch Plus controller that comes with the Quest 3. It has been suggested that Meta may not ship the headset with the controllers to lower the retail price, but according to this leak, it could come with the Touch Plus controller.

However, Meta has been adding more gesture controls to the headset recently, so the controllers may not be as necessary as they once were.

Previous rumors have indicated that Meta will sell the Quest 3S for around $300. The current Meta Quest 3 costs $499 for the 128GB model.
