Five employees in the Böblingen district are fighting against it – On Friday, the fight against wild garbage will be declared worldwide – News

Last year, 10 million people in 190 countries took part in the campaign.

District of BöblingenThe annual World Cleanup Day will take place again on Friday, September 20th. The waste management company would like to draw attention to this day of action, which calls on people around the world to work together to combat environmental pollution caused by illegal waste. In 2023, more than 10 million people in over 190 countries took part in World Cleanup Day and campaigned for a waste-free world with their respective campaigns. The environmental protection organization “Let’s do it!” Germany eV, for example, won the “UN SDG Award 2023” together with other national organizations, the “Oscar” for a clean, healthy and waste-free future.

In the United Nations calendar

This award and the inclusion of World Cleanup Day in the United Nations calendar show that this day is more than just an annual event – it is a global symbol of unity and a shared commitment to combating littering on earth. The district of Böblingen and its 26 municipalities also have to deal with litter on a daily basis. It is a serious problem that not only affects the beauty of the landscape. There has been a further increase in illegal dumping of rubbish, particularly in urban areas. Bottles, to-go cups, cigarette butts, packaging and other waste pollute streets and green spaces and also endanger the habitat of humans and animals.

The Böblingen waste management company (AWB) is also badly affected and has five employees cleaning the approximately 350 sites for glass, cans and old textiles on a “continuous loop”. Illegal dumping – including bulky waste and hazardous waste – is the order of the day here. “Each and every one of us can act individually and make a difference,” says Wolfgang Hörmann, plant manager of the waste management company: “By taking part in cleanups, we show that.” We are committed to a clean and healthy environment, in keeping with the motto “think global – act local.” It is very gratifying that so many people are rolling up their sleeves and taking action. Some groups from the district have already registered on the World Cleanup Day platform.” The AWB is also actively promoting the annual district-wide spring clean-up, which took place next year from March 8th to 15th as a joint action week with as many towns and communities as possible. More information on this and other campaigns against illegal waste in the Böblingen district as well as on World Cleanup Day can be found on the AWB website at www.awb-bb.de/wildermuell.
