Current polls on Donald Trump vs. Kamala: One in five Republicans believe Harris won the debate

A week after the ABC News presidential debate, Vice President Kamala Harris is finally getting the good news. She now has a 6-point lead over Trump in a post-debate poll conducted by Morning Consult. The pollsters surveyed 11,022 likely U.S. voters from Sept. 13-15. “A majority of likely voters — including one in five Republicans — believe Harris won the debate, and her performance appears to solidify her national lead over the former president,” Eli Yokley, political analyst at Morning Consult, said in an emailed statement to Axios.
Morning Consult calls it a new record, with support for Harris at 51% compared to 45% for Trump. Kamala Harris’ supporters include 2020 Biden voters, liberals, women, 18-34 year olds and millennials.
The post-debate momentum started to emerge after a few days of the debate, as many factors go into the post-debate ratings. Many people do not watch the debate live, but rather follow the chatter that comes after the debate. For example, Fox announced that Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris shortly after the debate, which gave her campaign a boost. But again, the debate news cycle was interrupted because of the second assassination attempt on Donald Trump, which occurred within a week of the ABC News debate.
Another recent poll from one of America’s top polling firms also has good news for Kamala Harris. According to CNN, The Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll conducted by Selzer & Co. showed Donald Trump receiving 47% of the vote while the vice president received 43% – within the margin of error – in a state the former president won comfortably twice. This poll was conducted before the second assassination attempt on Trump.
“While the Hawkeye State is unlikely to be decisive in November, the fact that Selzer found a close race in a state that Trump dominates could bode well for Harris, both in terms of polling accuracy and her chances in neighboring Wisconsin,” CNN reported.
Another recent poll from Marquette University Law School showed Harris at 52% and Trump at 48% among likely voters. The average of recent polls from Marquette, CBS News/YouGov and CNN/SSRS has Harris ahead by 4 percentage points.
