AIKEN, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – The victim of a fatal shooting Wednesday night at Columbia Avenue Northeast and Chesterfield Street has been identified.

According to dispatchers, the call came in at 10:41 p.m.

Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables announced Thursday morning that Mathis suffered a gunshot wound to the body and was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m.

An autopsy is planned for next week.

A News 12 crew spotted police tape around the area and at least four police cars around 11:30 p.m.

A News 12 team also saw a bicycle in the middle of the road.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the Aiken Department of Public Safety are continuing the investigation.

The shooting occurred in the midst of a Outbreak of violent crime that left more than 170 people dead across the CSRA in just over two years.

The crime wave affected communities large and small, but as the region’s largest city, Augusta was hit particularly hard.

The authorities have blamed gangs for the problem.
