Rory McIlroy announces final schedule for 2024 season, including 27th wildcard event | Football | sport

Rory McIlroy has revealed his final schedule for the year after enduring a difficult 2024 on the golf course.

The Northern Irishman’s wait for a major tournament enters its second decade after McIlroy missed the chance to end his decade-long wait for a league title.

After finishing in the top 25 at both the Masters and the PGA Championship, McIlroy seemed destined to win his first major title at the US Open, but was forced out on the final day.

Describing it as one of the worst days of his career, McIlroy struggled to put the Pinehurst disaster behind him and failed to make the cut at the Open Championship in July at St Andrews.

McIlroy was able to correct some of his form problems in subsequent tournaments, even taking back-to-back second-place finishes at the Irish Open and the BMW PGA Championship.

But heading into the final months of the year, McIlroy’s busy schedule is beginning to emerge.

That’s because McIlroy has confirmed he will be traveling to New Zealand for the first time in his professional career at the end of the year.

After this weekend’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland, the four-time major winner said: “I’m going to be playing with some good friends at some of New Zealand’s great golf courses like Tara Iti, Kauri Cliffs and great courses like that.”

“I have a friend who owns a house in New Zealand so he is organizing us for five days, so it will be nice to play golf down there and just hang out at the end of the year.”

McIlroy last played golf as a teenager 18 years ago in New Zealand, when he was part of the European team that played for the Sir Michael Bonallach Trophy at host Auckland Golf Club.

The 35-year-old revealed that after a hectic year, he’s just looking forward to “spending time doing other things.”

He added: “It’s been a busy year, this week’s Dunhill was my 25th tournament, while the Abu Dhabi HSBC and the DP World Tour Championship the following week will be my 26th and 27th of the year.”

“I still have a bit to do as I have the game in Vegas later in November and then I’m looking forward to the trip to New Zealand.

“So I’ll continue to stay busy over the next few months, but I’m looking forward to doing other things that interest me and just spending time doing other things.”
