BBC Brendan O’Carroll’s racist joke that sparked Mrs Brown’s Boys investigation revealed | Celebrity News | Showbiz and television

Brendan O’Carroll, the creator and star of Mrs Brown’s Boys, has apologized after a “racist remark” he made sparked a BBC investigation.

During a script run-through for the Christmas special last Wednesday with the cast and crew, O’Carroll, 69, allegedly made a comment that “implied” the use of the N-word.

While playing the role, O’Carroll is said to have remarked: “I don’t call a spade a spade, I call a spade…”

According to Daily Mail, they claim that the actor started using the N-word before being stopped by his co-star Jennifer Gibney, who plays Cathy.

In a statement shared with the publication, O’Carroll’s representative said: “We would also like to clarify that the ‘n’ word was not uttered at all but was implied.” Agnes (Ms. Brown) started the word but was prevented from finishing it as she knew she would by her daughter Cathy.”

Team members who heard the comment were reportedly surprised and reported it, prompting the BBC to take swift action.

O’Carroll admitted to the Mirror: “At a reading of the Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas special there was a clumsy attempt at a joke by the character Agnes in which a racist term was implied. “It backfired and caused offense,” which I deeply regret and for which I have apologized.

The BBC also addressed the issue, saying: “While we do not comment on individuals, the BBC is against any form of racism and we have robust processes in place should issues ever arise,” reports the Mirror.

According to insiders, the incident halted production on the marquee episode as the entire team stood down while O’Carroll’s comments were investigated.

The incident led to a delay in the start of rehearsals at BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay studios. After the investigation concluded and O’Carroll issued an apology, normal rehearsal schedules resumed.
